National Heroes' Day

i.
gray wisps blow
against the blood-drenched sky
a mark on the calendar
'Remember this day!', the glorious head says
in grim, cold, solid tones
no one hears but angels watching tombs

ii.
Cathay Pacific lands on Philippine ground.
There they descend, tugging bags full of
cans, used-clothes, colognes, dollars
for families, for friends, for neighbors
awaiting and waving the millennium's heroes -
the economic warriors, serving foreign lords

iii.
A hundred years ago, they fought the invaders.
They died in their birthground.
Today they are still fighting.

iv.
