Poetry #413
(published December 18, 2008)
Waking Up, Again
by Jonathan Hayes
Not to be at work till the afternoon
yet wake in the wee morn while city
trashcans rumble 'gainst the concrete

Last night's beer cans or dead soldiers
as gramps would call them, on the desk
staring at me like the world trade centers

And a brave cockroach that will not go away
like a third rate new york school poem in the
new best american poetry
